Veterans Memorial
The Sugarcreek Veterans Memorial will soon be a reality for our community. It is planned as a memorial to honor all veterans and will be strategically located with access from Pine Court, at the northeast corner of the intersection of Upper Bellbrook and Feedwire Roads. The site will be visible, accessible, adaptive and a magnet for community activities. In addition to convenience and visibility, the location is walkable with access to Eden Meadows, East of Eden, Deerfield Estates and Kable's Mill as well as the High School and Middle School sites.
The Sugarcreek Township Board of Trustees sought and received endorsement by the Bellbrook Sugarcreek Board of Education for use of the site (previously donated by the School District to the Park District) and the Park District transferred the land for the memorial site to the township for $1.00. A preliminary site design has been completed, with construction well underway. The Memorial Park has received a commitment of $90,000 in Ohio Capital Improvement Funds from the legislature.
The focal point of the Veterans Memorial will be a statue of local WWII veteran Jim "Pee Wee" Martin, commissioned by the township to honor Pee Wee's legacy and to remember the sacrifices made by his unit in WWII. As a way for community members to be involved and remember their own family members and veterans, a memorial brick plaza will be incorporated into the site's design.
